Colour, or the absence of it, is a fundamental element of any artistic creation. The use of colour can create definition, separation or depth but more significantly, colour summons an immediate emotional response. From passion to fear, calm to chaos, colour is the unspoken story teller of an artwork. It can elude to the ocean or forest or the flames of a fire and can evoke memories of times and experiences past. Colour is aesthetic. Colour is symbolic. And colour is infinite.
GAS SYD presents COLOUR BURN, a group art exhibition that showcases a diverse array of unique work from independent and emerging Sydney artists. While an emphasis on ‘Colour’ is not necessarily a theme or prerequisite, this show acknowledges that colour always plays an essential role in the creation of art and our perception of it - from the monotone, to the subdued, to the bold - the palette of a work, whether 2D or 3D, often informs our first reaction as well as what is most remembered.
